A 10 cubic yard dumpster is rated by what it holds inside, not by its outside size. Dumpsters.com notes that outside measurements vary by maker, while the inside capacity stays at 10 cubic yards. The dimensions above are approximate outside measurements. Ask for the exact measurements if your drop spot is tight.
What Fits in a 10 Yard Dumpster
| Job | Fits a 10 yard? | Rough weight when full |
| One room or attic cleanout | Usually | About 1.25 to 1.5 tons |
| One car garage cleanout | Usually | About 1.25 to 1.5 tons |
| Bathroom remodel | Usually | About 1 to 2 tons, more with tile or plaster |
| Full box of mixed remodel debris | Yes by space | About 2.1 to 2.5 tons, so it may go over |
| Two car garage or full basement | Often too small | Consider a 15 yard |
| Whole house cleanout | Often too small; size depends on the amount being discarded | Consider a 20 or 30 yard |
Bulky furniture takes more room than its weight suggests. Break down tables, shelves, and bed frames so they lie flat, and fill the gaps with bags.
The 2 Ton Weight Allowance
Weight decides the right size as often as space does. At the listed density, a full box of typical household junk would weigh about 1.25 to 1.5 tons. Books, dense furniture, and other heavy contents can increase that. Heavier debris can pass 2 tons before the box looks full:
| Debris | Weight per cubic yard | About how much reaches 2 tons |
| Household junk | 250 to 300 lbs | About 13 to 16 cubic yards, more than the box holds |
| Mixed remodel debris | 420 to 500 lbs | About 8 to 9.5 cubic yards |
| Drywall | About 470 to 500 lbs | About 8 to 8.5 cubic yards |
| Dirt | About 930 lbs | About 4.3 cubic yards |
Here is how an overweight charge works. Say a full box of remodel debris weighs 2.5 tons. That is half a ton over, which adds about $25 to $28 at $50 to $55 per ton, if your quote bills partial tons. Confirm how your quote handles partial tons. Every load must also stay within the hauling limit, which is the most the truck can safely carry.
Concrete, Brick, Dirt, and Shingles
Heavy debris is where a small box makes sense, because a larger box does not add much weight allowance. Ask first, since material acceptance and loading limits must be confirmed for every heavy load.
Concrete: 2 tons covers only about 80 square feet of a 4 inch slab. See our concrete dumpster rental page for slab sizes.
Shingles: a 10 yard fits about 9 to 16 full squares of one layer of architectural shingles within 2 tons. See our roofing dumpster rental page for sizes by roof.
Dirt and sod: keep them in their own load, since soil reaches 2 tons fast.
Keep heavy debris below the top edge or the provider’s lower marked fill line for heavy materials.
10 Yard or 15 Yard?
| Feature | 10 yard | 15 yard |
| 7 day price | $300 to $350 | $350 to $400 |
| Weight included | 2 tons | 3 tons |
| Holds about | 3 pickup loads | 4 to 5 pickup loads |
| Length | About 12 ft | About 14 ft |
| Best for | One room, a one car garage, a bathroom | A two car garage, a full basement, a move |
The 15 yard includes 1 more ton. If your quoted upgrade costs $50, compare that with the expected overweight charge on the 10 yard. For example, a load about a ton over would add $50 to $55, so the two totals would be close, and the 15 yard gives you more room. For a whole house, a 20 yard runs $370 to $430 with 3 to 4 tons. See every size in our dumpster prices and sizes guide.
Placing a 10 Yard at Your Home
At about 12 feet long, the 10 yard is our shortest box. That helps on the narrow and shared driveways common in older neighborhoods like the Cathedral District and the West Side, where many homes date to the late 1800s.
- Place the dumpster on a hard, level surface entirely outside the public right of way. Confirm the boundary if the spot is near the sidewalk or curb.
- Tell us about available approach space, overhead wires, and access restrictions so we can confirm delivery requirements.
- If the dumpster must sit in the street or an alley, you need a permit from the city Engineering Division first. Our dumpster permit guide explains the rule.
