Accepted Dumpster Items

What Can Go in a Dumpster

Household junk and furniture

Couches, chairs, tables, dressers, carpet, clothing, toys, boxes, and bagged household trash can all go in. Break down large furniture so it lies flat. You will fit more in the box. See our residential dumpster rental page for cleanout sizes.

Remodel and construction debris

Drywall, lumber, plywood, cabinets, flooring, tile, doors, windows, and fixtures are accepted. Tile and plaster are heavy, so tell us about them when you call. Our construction dumpster rental page covers sizes by job.

Roofing shingles

Asphalt shingles, felt, nails, and flashing can go in. Shingles are heavy, so size the dumpster by weight. Our roofing dumpster rental page shows how many roof squares fit in each size.

Concrete, brick, and dirt

Ask first; material acceptance and loading limits must be confirmed. Clean, cured concrete is usually accepted, while brick, block, and dirt depend on the load. All of them fill the weight allowance fast. A 10 yard with 2 tons included holds only about 80 square feet of a 4 inch slab. See our concrete dumpster rental page before you load heavy debris.

Yard waste, in its own load

Michigan law does not allow more than a small amount of yard waste to go to a landfill. Leaves, grass, and brush should stay out of a trash load. Ask about a yard waste only load, or see our yard waste dumpster rental page.

Check Before Loading

Items to Ask About Before You Load

These items depend on the load and the disposal site. Call (989) 831 9600 before you put one in.

Mattresses and box springs

Some disposal sites charge extra for mattresses, and some do not take them. Tell us how many you have, and we will tell you if they can go in and what it costs.

Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners

These hold refrigerant. Federal rules say the refrigerant must be recovered before the appliance is thrown away, according to the EPA. Call before you load one so we can tell you whether it can be accepted.

Washers, dryers, stoves, and water heaters

Large appliances are handled differently from household junk. Ask before loading any large appliance.

TVs, computers, and monitors

Electronics may contain lead or mercury, so keep them out unless approved. Saginaw County residents can take TVs, computers, and phones to MMWA collection by appointment. Businesses can check EGLE’s guidance for recycling options.

Dried latex paint

Liquid paint never goes in a dumpster. Fully dried latex paint is sometimes accepted, but rules differ by disposal site, so ask first. MMWA takes latex, oil based, and spray paint at its household hazardous waste collection.

Stumps, sod, and soil

Stumps and soil are dense and heavy. Many yard waste loads do not take stumps, and soil can use up a 10 yard’s 2 tons at about 4 cubic yards. Ask about a separate load.

Banned Dumpster Items in Michigan

What Cannot Go in a Dumpster in Michigan

Michigan law does not allow these to be delivered to a landfill: used oil, lead acid batteries, whole tires beyond a small number, bulk liquids, regulated hazardous waste, PCBs, sewage, and asbestos except at approved sites. Our acceptance rules depend on the material, receiving facility, and applicable disposal requirements.

Paint, stain, solvents, and chemicals

Liquid paint, stain, varnish, paint thinner, lawn chemicals, antifreeze, and cleaners stay out. Take them to MMWA household hazardous waste.

Car batteries and lithium batteries

Car batteries are banned from Michigan landfills. Lithium batteries can cause fires if crushed, so never put them in dumpsters. Tape the terminals, bag each battery, and take them to a collection site. Learn more from the EPA.

Tires

Whole tires are banned from Michigan landfills beyond a small number. Use the county tire drop off listed below.

Propane tanks, gas cans, and fuel

Never load a propane tank, gas can, or fuel, even if it seems empty. Leftover gas can ignite.

Asbestos

Asbestos never goes in our dumpsters. It has to go to a landfill approved for it, handled by a licensed contractor. See the older homes section below.

Cleanout Tips for Older Homes

Older Saginaw Homes: What to Check Before a Cleanout

Many homes in the Cathedral District and the West Side date to the late 1800s. Old floor tile, pipe wrap, and siding in houses this age can contain asbestos, and old paint can contain lead. If you plan to tear out floors, walls, or siding, have the material tested first. EPA’s lead safe page explains the rules for homes built before 1978.
