Beyond City Trash Pickup

When City Trash Pickup Is Not Enough

The City of Frankenmuth trash page describes weekly service through the Mid Michigan Waste Authority (MMWA), with Waste Management drivers. As listed there when we reviewed it in October 2026:

The page does not say whether remodeling or construction debris is accepted. Call the city at (989) 652 9901 to confirm before you set any out. A kitchen tear out, a roof, or a full house cleanout will usually be too much for bags and two large items a week.

If you would rather haul debris yourself, Peoples Landfill at 4143 East Rathbun Road in Birch Run lists construction and demolition debris among the waste it accepts, with weekday hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call ahead about fees and accepted loads.

Beyond Weekly Trash Pickup

Businesses: Check the City Rule First

The city trash page says dumpsters used by businesses must go through the city’s commercial dumpster collection program.

If you run a store, restaurant, office, or rental property inside city limits, call the city at (989) 652 9901 before you rent a roll off. Ask whether a short term dumpster for a remodel or cleanout is allowed.

Frankenmuth Township has its own government, so township addresses follow township rules. For larger business cleanouts, see our commercial dumpster rental page.

Permits and Historic District

Permits and the Historic District

Building permits for the city come from the Building Codes Authority. Call (989) 652 9901 to ask whether your project needs one.

Homes and buildings in the historic district have one more step. Before you change the outside of a building or tear one down, the city’s historic district commission must approve the plans, and no work can start until it does. Get your approvals first, then schedule your dumpster delivery.

Yard Waste and Tire Disposal

Yard Waste, Brush, and Leaves

Michigan law limits yard waste in landfills, so keep grass, leaves, and brush out of a trash dumpster. The city offers three routes:

  • Weekly yard waste (city page): paper yard waste bags or cans of 20 gallons or less with handles, each with a Yard Waste sticker. Stickers are sold at City Hall, Gill Roy’s Hardware, and True Value Frankenmuth. Twigs must be under 2 inches in diameter, and each container must weigh 50 pounds or less. Root balls, soil, stumps, tree trunks, large shrubs, rocks, and bushes are not accepted.
  • Brush chipping: the city chips brush over 2 inches in diameter on the first Monday of each month, April through December.
  • Fall leaf collection (city page): starts in mid October. Rake leaves only into the street, about 12 inches from the curb, in piles no higher than 18 inches and at least 25 feet from corners. Streets without curbs and gutters are not collected.

For stumps or a large lot clearing, ask us before you book. See our yard waste dumpster page.

Projects That Need a Dumpster

Projects That May Need a Dumpster

  • Kitchen and bathroom remodels. A 15 or 20 yard usually fits, depending on the amount of debris. See our construction dumpster rental page.
  • Roof replacements. Shingles are heavy, so a 10 or 20 yard is often the right size. See our roofing dumpster rental page.
  • Estate, garage, and basement cleanouts. Furniture and boxes are bulky but light. See our residential dumpster rental page.
  • Storm cleanup. Check current city announcements for special storm debris collections before booking. Use the city brush program for branches, and a dumpster for damaged siding, gutters, or household items.

Placement and Road Rules

Placement and Who Handles the Road

Keeping the dumpster on your own driveway is the simplest path. Measure first: a 10 or 15 yard is about 12 to 14 feet long, and the 20, 30, and 40 yard boxes are about 22 feet long. Place it on a hard, level surface entirely outside the road right of way, and tell us about new concrete, pavers, overhead wires, low branches, and gates. Ask about boards under the rails. If the dumpster cannot fit on your property and must go on a street, who you call depends on the road:

  • Main Street downtown is part of M 83, a state highway. The Michigan Department of Transportation handles it.
  • Other city streets: call the city at (989) 652 9901 before you book.

The Saginaw County Road Commission explains this split: state highways go to the state, and properties inside city limits go to the city.

Dumpster or City Drop Off What Saginaw Residents Should Know
Loading and Restrictions

Loading and What Stays Out

  • Keep debris below the top edge or the provider’s lower marked fill line. Every load must stay within the provider’s approved hauling limit.
  • Load heavy, flat items low and spread the weight evenly.
  • Liquid paint, chemicals, tires, car batteries, lithium batteries, propane tanks, and asbestos stay out. See what can go in a dumpster.
  • The city says hazardous waste, tires, and computers go to special county collections; call (989) 652 9901 for dates. The Saginaw County Health Department also holds household hazardous waste drop offs by appointment for county residents at (989) 758 3686.
  • For propane tanks, ask a propane dealer whether it accepts your tank for return, exchange, or disposal.
