Choose the Right Dumpster Size

What Size Dumpster Do You Need? Small to Large

10 yard dumpster: small jobs and heavy debris

The smallest size holds about 3 pickup truck loads. At 12 feet long, it suits shorter driveways, as long as the truck has room to back in. Pick it for a bathroom remodel, one room of junk, or small loads of concrete, brick, or dirt, which need a call first because of loading limits.

15 yard dumpster: garage cleanouts and smaller roofing jobs

About 4 to 5 pickup truck loads, with 3 tons included. It is still short enough for many older driveways. Pick it for a garage cleanout, flooring removal, or a one layer roof of about 14 to 25 squares, depending on shingle weight.

20 yard dumpster: whole house cleanouts

About 6 pickup truck loads. This is the first of the long dumpsters, at 22 feet, so it needs a full length driveway. Pick it for a whole house cleanout, a kitchen remodel, or a larger roof.

30 yard dumpster: big renovations

About 9 pickup truck loads, with 4 to 5 tons included. Pick it for major renovations, additions, and large estate cleanouts with bulky, light debris.

40 yard dumpster: commercial and demolition jobs

About 12 pickup truck loads, with 5 to 6 tons included. Pick it for commercial cleanouts, demolition, and very bulky loads. It is not a good fit for shingles or concrete, which hit the weight limit long before the dumpster is full.

What’s Included in Your Rental

What Your Dumpster Rental Price Includes

What the quoted price covers

Delivery to your driveway or job site, pickup when you are done, 7 rental days, and disposal up to your weight allowance.

Extra charges and how to avoid them

Extra days cost $10 per day after the first 7. Weight over your allowance costs $50 to $55 per ton. A city permit adds cost if the dumpster has to sit in the street instead of your driveway; see our dumpster permit guide. Banned items cannot go in the dumpster. They may cause refused pickup, removal requirements, or additional charges under your rental terms. Our guide to what can go in a dumpster lists them.

Overweight charges can increase your final bill. Check the weight estimates below before choosing a size.

Debris Weight Guide

How Much Does Your Debris Weigh?

Dumpster size sets your base price, while debris weight affects whether you pay overweight charges. These are typical weights for one cubic yard of loose debris, based on conversion tables from the US EPA, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the City of Clayton, California. Your actual load is weighed, so treat these as estimates.

DebrisWeight per cubic yard
Broken concrete and brickAbout 1,400 to 1,800 lbs

How Many Shingle Squares Fit?

Roofing shingles: how many squares fit

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof. One torn off square weighs about 200 to 240 lbs for 3 tab and about 240 to 420 lbs for architectural shingles. Premium shingles run about 300 lbs per square, and some weigh more, so the premium column uses 300 lbs as its basis. These ranges from shingle makers GAF and IKO include nails and underlayment. Your shingle brand and underlayment can change them, so use the table as a starting point. Here is how many squares of one layer fit inside each weight allowance.

Two shingle layers can roughly double the shingle weight, reducing the number of roofing squares your allowance covers. IKO also says 30 yard dumpsters are not meant for asphalt shingles. See our roofing dumpster rental page for sizes by roof.

Concrete, Brick, and Dirt Limits

Concrete, Brick, and Dirt

Ask first; material acceptance and loading limits must be confirmed. At 1,400 to 1,800 lbs per cubic yard, roughly 2 cubic yards of broken concrete may fit within a 10 yard dumpster’s 2 ton allowance. That is about a small patio section. These are loose cubic yards of broken pieces, which have air gaps. A solid slab weighs more for the same space, about 48 to 50 lbs per square foot at 4 inches thick, so use our concrete dumpster rental page when you know the slab size. Confirm the loading limit with us before you fill it, and ask about a concrete only load for bigger jobs.

How to Pay Less for Your Dumpster Rental

  1. Size by weight, not just space. Heavy debris in a big dumpster still costs per ton over the allowance.
  2. Keep concrete and dirt out of mixed loads. Ask about a separate concrete load instead.
  3. Keep debris below the top edge or the provider’s lower heavy material fill line. An overfilled dumpster cannot be hauled until it is leveled.
  4. Plan your 7 days. Line up your crew or helpers before delivery, and remember that pickups happen on weekdays only.
  5. Use your driveway. Keeping the dumpster entirely outside the public right of way avoids a city street permit; see our dumpster permit guide.
  6. Keep banned items out. Paint, tires, batteries, and liquids can get a load refused. Check what can go in a dumpster before you load.
Dumpster or City Drop Off What Saginaw Residents Should Know
Dumpster vs. DIY Hauling

Dumpster or Hauling It Yourself in Saginaw?

City of Saginaw residents can drop off one truck and trailer load a month for free at the city Convenience Station, 1435 S. Washington Ave. It opens the second Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to noon, and you need a Michigan license or ID showing city residency. The city’s Convenience Station policy excludes roofing shingles, paint, and chemicals.

That works for a small cleanout. Larger cleanouts may require multiple trips and exceed the station’s monthly free allowance. Roof tear offs can’t go there at all. For those jobs, a dumpster usually saves you time, fuel, and trips.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dumpster Prices and Sizes FAQs

Price depends on your debris type, its weight, and your delivery spot. Heavy debris uses more of the weight allowance, and some loads need special handling. Your quote confirms the exact price before you book.

About 14 to 30 squares of one layer, depending on the shingle type. Architectural shingles land at about 14 to 25 squares within the 3 ton allowance, based on IKO and GAF weights. A second shingle layer can roughly double the weight, so it covers far fewer squares.

Roughly 2 cubic yards may fit within the 2 ton allowance. Confirm the loading limit before filling. Weight over the allowance costs $50 to $55 per ton, so ask about a concrete only load for bigger jobs.

For light, bulky debris, often yes, because a second haul costs more than a slightly larger dumpster. For heavy debris, ask us to confirm the right container and loading limit before choosing a larger size.

The 10 and 15 yard dumpsters are 12 to 14 feet long, and the larger sizes are about 22 feet. Length is only part of it. The truck also needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 25 feet of overhead clearance to set the dumpster down. We confirm access for your address when you call.

The load is weighed at the disposal site after pickup. If it goes over your allowance, the extra is billed at $50 to $55 per ton.
