A 40 cubic yard dumpster is rated by what it holds inside. Dumpsters.com lists its outside measurements as external only, notes they vary, and puts the inside capacity at 40 cubic yards, or about 240 to 250 bags of the 33 gallon kind. Ask for the exact measurements before you plan the drop spot.
When you compare quotes, check how many days and tons are included, the extra day fee, and the per ton overage rate. The lowest starting price is not always the lowest total.
What Fits in a 30 Yard Dumpster
These are rough planning estimates for one full box. Weights use EPA conversion factors of about 250 to 300 lbs per cubic yard for household junk and about 420 to 500 lbs for mixed remodel debris.
| Job | Fits a 30 yard? | Rough weight when full |
| Packed estate or whole house cleanout | Often | About 3.75 to 4.5 tons |
| Major renovation with mostly light debris | Often | Depends on the mix; drywall and plaster add weight fast |
| Office, store, or warehouse cleanout | Often | Light and bulky; see our commercial dumpster rental page |
| Full box of mixed remodel debris | Yes by space | About 6.3 to 7.5 tons, well over the allowance |
| Shingles, concrete, brick, or dirt | Not recommended | Use a smaller box |
| A typical home cleanout | Sometimes; size depends on the amount being discarded | A 20 yard may cost less |
At the listed density, a full box of typical household junk would weigh about 3.75 to 4.5 tons. Books, dense furniture, and other heavy contents can increase that.
Who a 40 Yard Fits, and Who It Doesn’t
Dumpsters.com notes that a box this size is best suited to a jobsite or commercial lot because of its footprint. Here is how that plays out:
| Job | Good fit? | Why |
| Office, store, or warehouse cleanout | Yes | Furniture, shelving, and boxes are bulky and light |
| Commercial cleanout or tenant buildout, one floor of about 3,000 to 5,000 sq ft | Often | Weight depends on the mix; ask first if it includes drywall or flooring |
| Large estate cleanout of a packed house | Sometimes | About 5 to 6 tons when full of household junk; a 30 yard may cost less |
| Demolition with mostly light debris | Sometimes; ask first | Mixed debris can pass the weight allowance well before the box is full |
| A typical single home cleanout | Usually not | A 20 or 30 yard usually fits and costs less |
| Shingles, concrete, brick, or dirt | Not recommended | Use a smaller box and ask first |
| A short or narrow driveway | No | The box needs a full length spot and room for the truck |
The 5 to 6 Ton Weight Allowance
A 40 yard container has substantial volume, but dense debris can exceed its included weight allowance before it is full. Weights below use EPA conversion factors.
| Debris | Weight per cubic yard | About how much reaches 5 to 6 tons |
| Household junk | 250 to 300 lbs | About 33 to 48 cubic yards, close to or above the box’s capacity |
| Mixed remodel debris | 420 to 500 lbs | About 20 to 29 cubic yards |
| Drywall | About 470 to 500 lbs | About 20 to 26 cubic yards |
| Dirt | About 930 lbs | About 11 to 13 cubic yards |
At the listed density, a full load of household junk may weigh about 5 to 6 tons and could exceed a quoted 5 ton allowance. Books, dense furniture, and other heavy contents can increase that. A full box of mixed remodel debris would weigh about 8.4 to 10 tons.
Here is how an overweight charge works. Say a full box of remodel debris weighs 9 tons. With 6 tons included, that is 3 tons over, about $150 to $165. With 5 tons included, it is 4 tons over, about $200 to $220. These examples apply only if the provider approves the load for safe hauling. Every load must stay within the hauling limit, which is the most the truck can safely carry.
Keep debris below the top edge or the provider’s lower marked fill line for heavy materials. Rain and snow add weight to an open load, so ask about covering it between loading days.
30 or 40 Yard?
| Feature | 30 yard | 40 yard |
| 7 day price | $485 to $550 | $600 to $750 |
| Weight included | 4 to 5 tons | 5 to 6 tons |
| Holds about | 9 pickup loads | 12 pickup loads |
| Approximate height | About 6 ft | About 8 ft |
| Best for | A packed estate, a big renovation | Commercial cleanouts and very bulky jobs |
The 40 yard adds 10 cubic yards over the 30 yard, with a similar footprint and taller walls. Compare the exact included weight in both quotes. Confirm actual dimensions, truck access, overhead clearance, and loading door space. If your debris is heavy, compare the quoted cost of additional smaller container hauls with a 40 yard rental and potential overweight charges, subject to approved loading limits. See our 30 yard dumpster page and our dumpster prices and sizes guide.
Placing a 40 Yard at a Job Site or Business
A 40 yard needs a full length, hard, level spot on a lot or job site. Many homes in older Saginaw neighborhoods like the Cathedral District and the West Side have short or shared drives that cannot fit it, and alleys behind older storefronts can be tight too.
- Place the dumpster entirely outside the public right of way. Confirm the boundary if the spot is near the sidewalk or curb.
- Keep it clear of fire lanes, entrances, sidewalks, and storm drains.
- Tell us about available approach space, overhead wires, and access restrictions so we can confirm delivery requirements.
- If the dumpster must sit in the street or an alley, you need a permit from the city Engineering Division first. Our dumpster permit guide explains the rule.
Before a demolition, check the state asbestos notice rules on our construction dumpster rental page. For business cleanouts, see our commercial dumpster rental page. Liquid paint, chemicals, tires, car batteries, lithium batteries, propane tanks, and asbestos stay out; see what can go in a dumpster.
