When Township Trash Pickup Is Not Enough
Township residents get weekly curbside service through the Mid Michigan Waste Authority (MMWA). Homes south of Weiss Street are picked up on Mondays and homes north of Weiss Street on Tuesdays. That service is built for normal weekly household trash, and the township’s refuse program sets clear limits:
- Two bulk items per week.
- Trash must fit in the cart, with no more than 12 inches above the lip.
- Eviction, cleanout, and move out set outs are not allowed at the curb.
- Home rehab and construction materials are not collected. The township’s home rehab page names asphalt, brick, concrete, stone, plywood, drywall, lumber, and paint.
The City of Saginaw’s monthly drop off day is free only for city residents, so it is not an option for most township households. The township points residents to Peoples Landfill on East Rathbun Road in Birch Run, which accepts construction and demolition debris on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a fee. That means loading a trailer yourself and driving it south to Birch Run. A dumpster in your driveway lets you load at home and have the debris hauled for you.
Common Projects in the Township
More than 41,000 people live in the township, according to the 2020 census. Common projects that may need a dumpster include:
- Kitchen and bathroom remodels. A 15 or 20 yard usually fits, depending on the amount of debris.
- Roof tear offs. Shingles are heavy, so a 10 or 20 yard is often the right size. See our roofing dumpster rental page.
- Basement and garage cleanouts in the subdivisions off Center Road, McCarty Road, and Shattuck Road.
- Estate and move out cleanouts, which township curbside service will not take. See our home cleanout dumpster page.
- Store, office, and rental unit cleanouts near Fashion Square Mall on Bay Road and the shopping centers on Tittabawassee Road. See our commercial dumpster rental page.
- Flood cleanup. In 2020, flooding from the Edenville and Sanford dam failures forced evacuations in parts of the township, according to the township’s Wikipedia entry. Wet carpet, drywall, and furniture are heavy, so tell us what you are tossing.
Yard Waste, Brush, and the Township Brush Site
Michigan law limits yard waste in landfills, so keep grass, leaves, and brush out of a trash dumpster. Township residents have two free routes:
For a large lot clearing, ask us before you book. Our yard waste dumpster rental page explains the options.
Placement and Permits in the Township
Keeping the box on your own property is the simplest path, so measure your driveway first.
- Place the dumpster on a hard, level surface entirely outside the road right of way. Confirm the boundary if the spot is near the road or a ditch.
- A 10 or 15 yard is about 12 to 14 feet long. The 20, 30, and 40 yard boxes are about 22 feet long. Measure your driveway first.
- Tell us if your concrete is new or if you have pavers, and ask about boards under the rails.
- Tell us about overhead wires, low branches, gates, and access limits so we can confirm delivery requirements.
- Keep the box clear of mailboxes, fire hydrants, and drainage ditches.
The Saginaw County Road Commission requires a permit for any work or activity in the right of way of the roads it manages, and lists about 10 business days to process a complete application. State routes such as Bay Road (M 84) fall under the Michigan Department of Transportation. If the box cannot fit on your property, call the township at (989) 791 9800 and the Road Commission at (989) 752 6140 before you book.
Loading Your Dumpster
- Keep debris below the top edge or the provider’s lower marked fill line. Every load must remain within its approved hauling limit.
- Load heavy, flat items low and spread the weight evenly.
- Break down furniture and fill gaps with bags.
- Rain and snow add weight to an open load. Ask about covering it between loading days.
What Stays Out of the Dumpster
Liquid paint, chemicals, tires, car batteries, lithium batteries, propane tanks, and asbestos stay out. See what can go in a dumpster for the full list. Here is where those items can go:
- Household hazardous waste: the Saginaw County Health Department runs drop off events by appointment for county residents at (989) 758 3686. MMWA also runs a household hazardous waste program at (989) 781 9555.
- Propane tanks: ask a propane dealer whether it accepts your tank for return, exchange, or disposal.
- Usable furniture, appliances, and building supplies: Habitat for Humanity ReStore Saginaw at 315 West Holland Avenue may take them. Call (989) 754 9435 first.
In an older home or building, before you tear out old flooring, ceilings, or siding, check the asbestos notice rules on our construction dumpster rental page.
