To find the lowest total, compare the full quoted cost of a container that fits both the volume and the weight of your debris, including any extra hauls. Our dumpster prices and sizes guide explains how to choose.

City vs. Private Dumpster

City Dumpster or Private Roll Off?

The city rents its own small dumpsters. Its License and Fee Schedule, dated July 30, 2026, lists:

The city request form says payment comes before drop off, and each extra empty costs the full price again. A city box suits a small job at a city home. For a roof, a full cleanout, a longer project, a township address, or a business, a larger roll off may fit better. Confirm the city container’s loading limits, accepted materials, and additional charges before comparing totals.

Bay City Rental Rules

Bay City Dumpster Rental Rules

These city rules shape when you need a dumpster and where it can sit.

  • Building material stays off the curb. The city trash page says, “City trash crews will not pick up building, remodeling, or demolition material.” The revised Chapter 86 also bans placing contractor debris at the curb.
  • One bulk item per pickup. Residents may set out one bulk item or two kitchen size (13 gallon) bags beyond the cart. Carpet must be rolled and tied in 3 foot sections, no more than 8 inches across, with a limit of 2.
  • Regular trash goes in the city cart. Use the city cart for regular trash, following the separate allowance for approved extra bags and bulk items. Set it out no sooner than 4 p.m. the day before and no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Street placement needs a permit. The Engineering Division’s Encroachment Permit covers anything in the city right of way, and the city says it “includes placing a dumpster.” The fee schedule lists $25 for less than 90 days. Call Public Works at (989) 894 8316 before placement.

East Side vs. West Side

Across the River: East Side and West Side

The Saginaw River splits the city into an east side and a west side, joined by the Liberty, Veterans Memorial, Independence, and Lafayette Avenue bridges (Wikipedia). Check MDOT’s current Lafayette Avenue bridge updates for closures or delivery detours.

Older homes in the Center Avenue Historic District, near Central High School on Columbus Avenue, and along Midland Street on the west side often have tight driveways and alleys. Tell us about narrow spaces, parked cars, and overhead wires when you call.

City Hall is at 301 Washington Avenue, (989) 894 8200, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Public Works and Sanitation are at 1645 Marquette Avenue.

Projects That Need a Dumpster

Projects That May Need a Dumpster

  • Roof replacements. Shingles are heavy, so a 10 or 20 yard is often the right size. See our roofing dumpster rental page.
  • Kitchen and bathroom remodels. Ask the city whether your project needs a building permit before work starts. A 15 or 20 yard usually fits, depending on the amount of debris. See our construction dumpster rental page.
  • Estate, garage, and basement cleanouts. Furniture and boxes can be bulky; carpet, books, and dense items can add substantial weight. See our residential dumpster rental page.
  • Rental turnovers and business cleanouts. Confirm current commercial service requirements with the city. See our commercial dumpster rental page.

For clean concrete, the Bay County construction waste page lists local drop off sites that may take it at no charge. Call each site first.

Placement and Road Rules

Placement on Your Property

Keeping the dumpster on your own property is the simplest choice. Measure first: a 10 or 15 yard is about 12 to 14 feet long, and the 20, 30, and 40 yard boxes are about 22 feet long. Choose a provider approved hard, level surface entirely outside the road right of way, and tell us about new concrete, pavers, ditches, overhead wires, low branches, and gates. Ask about boards under the rails.

Private property placement entirely outside the public right of way generally avoids a street encroachment permit. Confirm the boundary near the sidewalk or curb before delivery.

Dumpster or City Drop Off What Saginaw Residents Should Know
Yard Waste and Drop-Off Center

Brush, Yard Waste, and the Drop Off Center

Michigan law limits yard waste in landfills, so keep grass, leaves, and brush out of a trash dumpster. The city yard waste page lists:

  • Yard waste: weekly from April 1 to November 30, in paper bags or containers of 32 gallons or less marked Yard Waste Only, each under 40 pounds.
  • Free brush pickup: April and November only. East side brush goes out by the 1st of the month, and west side brush by the 15th.
  • Paid brush pickup: May through October by appointment, $30 for the first 15 minutes and $25 for each added 15 minutes. Branches may be up to 5 inches across, in piles no larger than 4 feet wide, 8 feet long, and 4 feet high.

For small loads, the city’s drop off center at 2900 North Water Street works by appointment only. Bring ID as proof of residency and exact change. The fee schedule lists $30 per cubic yard by trailer.

Loading and Restrictions

Loading and What Stays Out

  • Keep debris below the top edge or the provider’s lower marked fill line. Every load must stay within the provider’s approved hauling limit.
  • Load heavy, flat items low and spread the weight evenly.
  • Liquid paint, chemicals, tires, car batteries, lithium batteries, propane tanks, and asbestos stay out. See what can go in a dumpster.
  • City curbside service does not take appliances, tires, auto parts, or hazardous materials. Ask the city about current options.
  • For propane tanks, ask a propane dealer whether it accepts your tank for return, exchange, or disposal.
Areas We Serve

Service Area and ZIP Codes

A Bay City mailing address does not always mean the address is inside the city limits. Township addresses follow township rules, not the city rules above. Confirm delivery coverage using your full street address, since ZIP boundaries and city boundaries differ. These ZIP notes come from ZIP data, not the Postal Service.

We also serve Buena Vista, Carrollton, Saginaw Township, and the City of Saginaw.
